The cofounders, after all, left OpenAI in 2021 explicitly to develop AI systems that were powerful, but also safe for humanity. Many of Anthropic’s early investors also have ties to the effective altruism community, a research field focused on how to do the “most good” possible, and the company has a strong investor base in Europe, which tends to be much less sympathetic to the U.S. Department of Defense.
